Me vs. The Door

Published by lindsaym under humor, me time, music Edit This

So there I was, standing in the kitchen after yet another amazing living room concert. People surrounded me, chatting, drinking, having a great time. Occasionally the back door opened as people stepped out for a smoke, and a cool breeze wafted in, carrying with it the distinct smell of cigarettes and beer. Being the responsible designated driver I am, I stood by myself in the kitchen sipping a cup of lukewarm coffee, and wondering if I looked as awkward as I felt.

I had lost my friend somewhere between the kitchen and the living room and I decided to go search for her. I stepped into the narrow breezeway that led to the living room and didn’t notice the ill-placed door that lead to the basement. I heard someone yell “Door!” but it was already too late.

Whack!

It seemed to be one of those doors where you really have to give it a hard shove to get it to open, and that’s exactly what happened. The door crashed into my arm holding the coffee, causing it to splash all over the door and onto the floor. The door ended its assault on me with a sharp smack to my cheekbone.

I backed into the kitchen, not sure whether to cry from the stinging in my cheek, or to laugh. So I laughed.

Can someone tell me why the sober girl at the party is the one who gets her ass kicked by a door? That’s just not fair.

It really isn’t that bad, but it makes a pretty damn funny story, so I thought I would share. I told Merrill, one of the performers, that I would make up some awesome story about getting into a really cool fight, but the actual story is much more entertaining! Leave it to Lindsay to get injured by a friggin’ door…

Anyway, back to the living room concert. If you ever have the opportunity to see a musician perform in someone’s living room, snatch it up (especially if it’s the following guys I’m going to mention). There are few things more exciting than listening to live music, and listening to live music in the intimacy of a living room is simply indescribable. Plus, how often do you get to hang out with musicians and BS with them after the concert (and get hit by doors)?

This is the fourth living room concert I have attended and each one is a unique experience.

Living Room Concert

JT Spangler’s songs are the perfect variety of sad, hopeful, and sometimes a little cynical. His powerful vocals and amazing range held the living room captive and left us hanging onto his every note. My personal favorite JT Spangler songs were Good Morning Baby and Bounce Back.

Isaac Johnson’s phenomenal guitar talent kept my eyes glued to his fingerboard. His soothing vocals delivered powerful songs filled with messages of hope, longing, and love. My favorite Isaac Johnson songs were Don’t Break and Second Date.

Chris Merrill rocked the joint in our little living room show. Isaac Johnson brought in his incredible guitar licks for a couple of Merrill’s songs and added even more pizazz to an already energetic and rockin’ sound. I enjoy Merrill’s Little Miss Pretentious (mostly because I think the girl he describes is exactly the opposite of me) and The One Thing.

Needless to say, it was a great time. My friend and I decided that these living room concerts are the one cool thing that we get to do as moms. We get to listen to fantastic music for an evening, eat, hang out, and not have to worry about kids. For a night, we get to sip wine and be adults and have normal adult conversations.

But all this fun comes at a cost. We know going into the evening, that we will be out late. We also know that, unlike our childless counterparts, we won’t be able to sleep in the next morning until noon. We go into these nights out fully aware that the next day we’re going to be dog tired and useless.

Last night I got 4 hours of sleep. Ya know that kind of tired where you don’t even want to bother drinking coffee because you’re so exhausted? Yeah, that’s how I feel right now. I’m not even sure how I’m functioning, let alone writing this blog.

But you know what? It was totally worth it.

(Except the door in the face thing. That still kinda hurts, and it’s getting all bruise-y. Yowch.)
