Baby Smells

I’m not sure why, but today I found myself thinking about all of those delicious newborn smells. (I take that back, I do know why. That darn baby itch is attacking me again and I’m baby obsessing.) It astounds me, with each child we bring into this world, that I enjoy every smell they make, even their poo. (Okay, I don’t know if I exactly enjoy that smell, but it doesn’t make me want to puke like I had expected before I was a mom.)

Bean

(Bean: A day old and already a ham.)

The smell of Pampers reminds me of newborns, probably because the hospital always hooked us up with a pack or two while we were there. (Funny story: Bean was such a pooper after she was born, we went through two packs while we were still in the hospital. That’s my girl!)

Spitup and poo (the eau de parfum for a mom of a newborn) are also unique smells, especially from a breastfed baby. There’s something about breastmilk that makes spitup and poo not smell as rancid as formula seems to. It’s funny though, as a mom, I have honed my skills on being able to tell the smell difference between spitup and vomit. They are definitely two very different scents.

Johnson’s Baby Wash will always bring back newborn memories. I love when they wash my new little chubby ones and hand them to me all wrapped up. That smell… mmmmm.

Speaking of smelling the baby, their heads seem to give off such a wonderful, natural scent. I love it. Another natural scent is their breath. Oh to live off of milk, not have teeth, and have such a clean smelling mouth all the time…

Then there’s that yucky smell… you know, when spitup collects in the folds under baby’s neck or behind her ears? That is not a pleasant one. Another place my kids always seemed to stink was between their toes. When they were newborns, I was constantly taking Q-Tips between those little piggies to clean out gunk. Eww.

I hope I never lose the memory of these smells. We can video tape every second of our kid’s lives and take a million pictures, but nothing will bring back the wonderful memories that these precious newborn smells will.
